Musical analysis of unrecorded local dance music in Kars region

Abstract

Kars had always a rich culture in terms of art and music, which is a branch of music, thanks to the fact that various groups live in this city and that it is under the influence of the Caucasus as well. Considering that fact, it is quite possible frequently encounter some Anatolian and Caucasian melodies, instruments performed in the music practices in Kars. It is aimed to collect the melodies of unrecorded local dances in Kars region and to analyze the compiled pieces from a musical point of view in this research. Even though performed in this region, identified number of dances not recorded yet is 22. The pieces were examined in terms of makam and usul. When examined as makam scales, it has been determined that there are pieces in the Uşşak and Çargâh makam scales, as well as in the Kürdi, Segâh, and Nikriz makam scales. When examined in terms of usul it is seen that mostly used ones are in the type of usul in which 6/8, 2/4, and 6/8 used together.
