Special Issue: Philosophy of Turkish Music from a Global Perspective
Call for Papers – Special Issue
Dear Researchers in Turkish Music,
On behalf of the Journal of Turkish Music (Türk Müziği), we are delighted to invite you to contribute your original scholarly research to our special issue entitled “Philosophy of Turkish Music from a Global Perspective.”
Turkish music possesses a distinctive body of musical knowledge and thought, shaped by historically developed traditions of makam, seyir, usûl, meşk, and musical performance. Wright (1990) examined the relationship between makam concepts and historical theories in Turkish music, demonstrating how musical concepts have been explained and interpreted differently across historical periods. Feldman (1996) investigated the historical development of makam, melodic progression, and rhythmic structures in Ottoman-Turkish music, highlighting the distinctive theoretical and performative characteristics of this musical tradition. Stokes (2010), meanwhile, explored the relationships between Turkish popular music, cultural identity, emotional experience, and the production of social meaning. These studies demonstrate that various dimensions of Turkish music have received scholarly attention in the international academic literature. Nevertheless, how this theoretical and cultural heritage can be related to fundamental questions in the philosophy of music, including ontology, epistemology, aesthetics, and musical meaning, remains an important area of inquiry.
The central argument of this special issue is that Turkish music should be understood not merely as an object of historical and cultural investigation but also as a tradition of thought capable of contributing to global discussions in the philosophy of music through its distinctive concepts. Accordingly, this special issue aims to examine the philosophical foundations of Turkish music from a global perspective; relate concepts such as makam, seyir, usûl, meşk, taksim, and musical aesthetics to different philosophical approaches; encourage comparative research between Turkish musical thought and the intellectual traditions of other musical cultures; and highlight the original contributions that the philosophy of Turkish music can make to international scholarly discourse.
