In this article, the influence of the creative traditions of the prominent Azerbaijani composer and pedagogue Arif Melikov on the vocal lyricism of Arzu Mammadova, one of the talented representatives of the composition school, is analyzed. Arif Melikov was not only a national figure of high regard in Azerbaijan but also a composer whose work gained significant recognition on the international music stage and within global academic circles. His compositions were included in the repertoires of orchestras worldwide, and he is remembered as one of the rare artists who “spoke the universal language of music.” For this purpose, a vocal cycle composed by Arzu Mammadova to the poetry of Vagif Samadoghlu was chosen for analysis. The musical imagery, language, and emotional tone of this cycle reveal clear parallels and affinities with the lyrical style of Arif Melikov. The melodic themes, expressive language, and emotional directions in the works reflect key features reminiscent of Melikov’s vocal aesthetics. A strong cohesion between word and sound is established; the selection of variable structures closely follows the semantic layers of the poem. The composer’s approach brings to the forefront creative solutions that deepen the meaning of the text and enhance its expression, while synthesizing traditional sensitivity with modern compositional thinking. The harmony established between sound and meaning in Mammadova’s works, combined with emotional intensity and melodic expressiveness, vividly reveals the aesthetic richness of contemporary Azerbaijani vocal music.
